Emperor X – Rig B – Company Car @ Drkmttr 4.21

by Ellipsea

Huge win for music happened on Sunday April 21st. Company Car played their first show, Rig B evoked distorted angels and Emperor X expressed the in between slices of life traveling at light speed to the heart.

Company Car, brainchild of Beau Williams, really impressed me. This band made up of guitar, bass, drums, saxophone and keys toed the balance of song writer and jazz enthusiast very well. Time changes, key changes and my opinion changing on this style of music were all prevalent. It reminded me of the band The Sea and Cake but stamped with Beau’s unique personality and story telling. I smiled through the whole set. Very interested in where this project is going and you should be too.

Rig B hit Drkmttr upside the head as power trio molding elements of slow-core, story telling, and humor drenched in distortion. Big nods to the bands Swirlies and Bedhead. Ryan Bigelow, song-writer of Rig B, has an authentic voice that sets him apart from the normal pastiche of the genre and plants himself firmly in the history and evolution of this style. I spoke to a friend after the set and she said she closed her eyes and let the sound wash over her. She was completely immersed. Rig B acts as a meditation for those who like it loud and don’t mind leaving the ear plugs at home. But, don’t be fooled. Like all the greats, Rig B expertly crafts the loud-quiet dynamic to keep you on your toes. At one point Ryan asked the crowed what their favorite vegetable was. Huge fan of health as I am, I loved this question. People screamed out immediately with answers and even questions. Are mushrooms a vegetable? What about pumpkins? Ryan’s favorite vegetable is Okra. Which he named a song after from their latest album ‘Now’. You can find it all over the internet, go listen to it.

Emperor X has been around for a while. I’ve heard the name plenty of times and whenever I did, the person telling me was always wide-eyed and enthusiastic trying to get me to listen. I never did. Huge mistake on my part because he blew me away. Chad Matheny has been making music under this name since the late 90’s. I over heard someone say he was hitch hiking and taking buses across the country to get from city to city. Wild way to tour and I’m deeply inspired by that approach. Do it at any cost. Chad had everyone in the audience circle around him as he sang and performed solo on the floor of Drkmttr. Everyone was wide-eyed screaming lyrics back at him about traveling, inflation, best friends, the internet, getting older, etc. I was hooked immediately. Emperor X has tons of music out and you should listen to every second of it. It’ll take you somewhere.
