MITSKI AT THE RYMAN

by KSalvant

I ended up going to the first night of Mitski’s residency at the Ryman on a spur– courtesy of my roommate’s uncle. It was one of those things where I didn’t even know she was playing there until two nights before and I probably wouldn’t have fought for some last minute tickets. But after going, I couldn’t believe that I had almost missed out on it.

It was truly one of the most moving performances I have ever seen– and I emphasize performance. The set design was super simple, (two chairs used as ongoing props / plot devices, and some beautiful flower-like arrangement that descended from the ceiling during My Love Mine All Mine), but Mitski transformed it into something larger and significant; I never thought a wooden chair could make me cry. She is now at the top of my list of best live vocals I’ve witnessed. She sang flawlessly even when dancing or running around on her hands and knees during I Bet On Losing Dogs. It was unexpected and life-changing.
