SCREEN STAR is the project of local vintage, oddities, and rarities man about town, MATT CAMPBELL. I’ve known Matt since we were just wee lil ones, playing in bands together and causing chaos wherever we’d go. He’s constantly fronted incredible bands–real heads remember MODERN TV and COURTYARD. Now, he’s shifted his focus onto SCREEN STAR, a new band with hints of TOTAL CONTROL and CLEANERS FROM VENUS influence.
SCREEN STAR’S first song “EYES WIDE SHUT” had the Tremendo Garaje seal of approval, and their first set a few months ago at SOFT JUNK blew everyone away. Backed by the likes of HANNAH MCELROY, JACOB CORENFLOS, BRAD BARTEAU, and RYAN SAAVEDRA, Matt was able to lean into his incredible frontman ability and take over the crowd, leaving it all out on the court. Soft Junk came alive that night, but SCREEN STAR broke the seal.
The new EP is four demos that will crawl into your head and stay there for days to come–the bassline for “FEELIN ALRIGHT” has been with me this whole trip. The biggest standout from the whole record to me though is “PRIMITIVE WORLD”, Nashville’s new fist-in-the-air-screaming-along-to-every-single-word-because-you-simply-just-can’t-sit-still-once-it-hits-the-chorus anthem. At least, that’s how it was at Soft Junk–so many people singing along without ever having heard the song before.
SCREEN STAR is a really exciting band to come onto the Nashville scene and I’m mad grateful. They’re here to stay–catch them at Hubba Hubba on June 6th with SKULL CULT from Indianapolis, Indiana (TITAN UP)!
