Hello from the Netherlands! The band played our third show of this run last night in Nijmegen, and it was a lot of fun. I smacked my head on the van door yesterday and thought I was gonna pass out the whole set, but not today satan. Today we’re driving out towards an island in the Netherlands called Vlieland. It’s a preserved island that’s never had a car on the island, and not a lot of industrialization. We gotta ferry all the gear over and I think it gets bicycled over to the venue? Not real sure but I’m excited to see what happens. ANYWAYS: here’s the Friday roundup!
FINALE – ES AMOR
This is one of the best bands in the whole world, I reckon. FINALE from Spain is one of the most amazing live bands I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing, thankfully multiple times now. We played with them and heart about them for the first time a few months back in Barcelona when we played together, alongside Prison Affair. “Es Amor” is the one that the entire crowd sang back at Pepet and crew, every single word at the top of their lungs. Listen to FINALE for yr health.
AMYL & THE SNIFFERS – CHEWING GUM
They’re finally back, AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS’ new songs have been crushing, loud, and infectious. “U SHOULD NOT BE DOING THAT” is one of my favorite songs out of all the new ones they’ve been releasing, and “CHEWING GUM” is in the same vein. It recalls Amy’s Out of the Blue-esque lyrics, directly talking to someone who we don’t know personally, but know the type, it’s someone we all face in our own lives. It’s some of their best work yet and I can’t wait for the rest of the album.
MJ LENDERMAN – JOKER LIPS
Speaking of being extremely fucking back, the newest single from everyone’s eventual AOTY MANNING FIREWORKS is a heater. It really should be studied, how MJ LENDERMAN can’t seem to miss. Fifth album in five years, he’s gone 5/5, shooting at 100%. “Joker Lips” is a slower, more-lax-than-usual MJ track with some of his best smirk-inducing one-liners: “Please don’t ask/How I’m doing/Draining cum from hotel showers/Hoping for the hours/To pass a little faster”. It’s been said a million times, but I’ll make it 1,000,001: the DAVID BERMAN influence is amazing, and something so beautiful. Haven’t heard it all the way yet but I can tell that this is going to be my album of the year already.
TWYE – HOLLOW
Lastly, out of left field comes TWYE, whose songs are some of the most amazing, down-to-earth tracks out of Nashville in a while. Music made my good people, for good people. “Hollow,” the first song on the recently released BIG SKY EP, is a standout, timeless track. It sounds like an old friend you haven’t seen in a while but can pick up right back where you left off with—it might feel a bit off at first, but it comes together perfectly and falls into place. I can’t wait to see these songs live at some point in the future. TWYE is for the future.
