How’s it going folks! Hope yr well. Sorry for the slight delay on this one! Spent all day yesterday bumping the new MJ LENDERMAN record. Here’s a couple of songs I’ve been into (excluding the MJ record, there’s a full write up dropping soon)!
ENUMCLAW – GROCERY STORE
The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most legendary bands in history, and ENUMCLAW is helping to to continue to write said history. Their latest album HOME IN ANOTHER LIFE just dropped a few weeks back on Run for Cover records. It’s a fantastic album, but this song in particular is a standout for me. “GROCERY STORE” has characters within its lyrics that you root for, it’s got an incredibly catchy chorus, and it tells the story and doesn’t leave any filler. I got to book Enumclaw in Nashville a while back and it was truly an incredible set. Run this one all the way up.
BEING DEAD – VAN GOES
The Austin legends are back, so soon after the hit record WHEN HORSES WOULD RUN. BEING DEAD is one of the best bands out right now I’d reckon, writing with such fervor with zero misses, and “VAN GOES” is a further example of the trio’s ability. It’s fun as hell to listen to, the call-and-response throughout the song is captivating. It’s got the straightforward vocal and drum parts that we know and love from Being Dead, but GAD DAM. It’s all about that “how do you like it now/how do you like it now” hook that to me is the coolest part of the song. This is THEE band
WILD PINK – THE FENCES OF STONEHENGE
This band appeared out of nowhere on my apple music radio and I feel like a better person as a result. I just saw that they’re going out with MJ LENDERMAN on the MANNING FIREWORKS tour too, talk about a massively stacked bill! This song is really interesting to me because at first it seems like a song that I wouldn’t really be into—I mean the guy is GOOD at singing. This is a new one. It sounds amazing though, it’s like if the Clean got really into Jason Molina or something later in their career.
TUCKER ZIMMERMAN FT. BIG THIEF – BURIAL AT SEA
It’s a really funny time to be making music—there’s an entire generation that helped bring rock music to the forefront still with us. LITTLE RICHARD only died four years ago, PAUL MCCARTNEY is still making music and touring the world, and TUCKER ZIMMERMAN is putting out another record with BIG THIEF backing him up. I prefer this a lot more than DOMINIC FIKE covering MACCA! “BURIAL AT SEA” is a beautiful track that’s got the BIG THIEF movement about it, the sort of careless sway about it. Something in ZIMMERMAN’S weathered voice paired with ADRIANNE LENKER’S familiar falsetto really makes the cross-generational duet hit super close to home.
