ANDY PITCHER – DOT

by Micah Mathewson

It would not be hard to deduce that Andy is a musician even moments after first speaking to him. His life has long revolved around music in an artistic, professional, and academic sense and conversation with him might certainly turn in that direction. It might also veer toward advice as to which way is best to spice dollar store beans and rice both ethically and most deliciously (it is with cayenne, paprika, msg and salt). You might however, even after knowing him for some time, have more trouble pinning down exactly where his personal musical tastes lie. His CV would be no help. Because his sensibilities are vast, he’s been asked to lend his talents to a wide swath of other artist’s work (from pedal bending ambient records to The Armed’s 2021 schitzo-punk ULTRAPOP). Dot is the answer to the wondering.

Having known Andy for 7(?) years, it was with a smile on my face that I suddenly realized while listening to the album, English is his second language and music is his first. Dot feels like speaking and living with my dear friend Andy Pitcher. The listener and he are in conversation and the discussion does not feel one sided. There are moments of the album that feel familiar and warm like shared meals and holidays. There are moments that sincerely feel joyful yet cutting as is a good joke, and then in a moments notice, like getting some distressing news after not speaking for a while, there are moments of chaos. Such is life. Such is Dot.

Dot feels like a sincere documentation of the peaks and valleys. The tools of documentation being years of experimenting and listening to the world turned animate via strings and midi. He’s done what we all as musicians strive to do, and that is speak sincerely on the truths of his life with music. Dot is back-looking and forward thinking and in my humble opinion, a stunning injection into the discourse of music. I hope my friend is proud, because I am.
