If you’ve been to any show in Nashville, odds are you’ve definitely run into BILLY CAMPBELL. He’s the guy behind the board at DRKMTTR, the brains behind SECOND FLOOR RECORDING CO., and of course, frontman of MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME, lovingly referred to as MYSAH.
The latest MYSAH record, titled “SET,” came out last week, and Billy, Zach, Thomas, and Husam brought it to life at SOFT JUNK alongside BATS and SOOT.
BATS opened the night, delivering an exceptional set full of old classics like “New Job” and “We All Miss Football Season”. Jess has a knack for writing timeless songs, songs that are nostalgic, songs that sound like Nashville in all of its various stages. The live rendition of these songs really capture how special they are: watching the band work to bring these songs to life is fun, you can’t help but smile during a BATS set, because they’ll already be smiling.
Coming off home plate swinging was SOOT. I’ve talked extensively about how much I love this band to anyone who will listen. Catching a SOOT set is similar to watching BATS: it’s all in the way that the band creates alongside each other in real time. They play on eleven and the energy is on twelve. Beyond the music, SOOT is a band of the community–you can tell because you will see the same faces front and center for every show. They ripped through songs from their masterpiece “WEARING A WIRE,” and played a new song, hopefully a sign of more to come. For those keeping track, that’s (hopefully) two new records from two of the best doing it out this year.
After a brief but incredible set from supergroup NATIVITY DOG, MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME took over Soft Junk, and it was electric. They played the entirety of “SET” top to bottom, with my personal standouts being “Blue Apollo” and “Happy 88 (no limit)”. They were loud and proud, completely blowing the roof off of the place, fully realizing what “SET” is. It was blissful, sitting there, getting blasted by the massive Soft Junk PA while Billy and co. celebrated an incredible LP.
